REGULATED TRANSPORT
Whether to deliver goods to a colleague or to transport goods that are dear to you, renting a container for sea freight is never a bad idea.
First, the container offers you more space for storage than any other means of transport. Then, its secure nature (sealed) is very reassuring. Why choose to send a sea container ? Should we call on transit specialists for this? And approximately how much does it cost? Answer here!
Dimensions of a shipping container
One of the first parameters you are faced with is that of size. A medium or large container? Should we go big so as not to risk narrowing the load, or on the contrary, go small to reduce costs?
In reality, the size of your container should be proportional to the volume of your cargo. It is not a question of free space margin here, but of occupancy rate. The more you fill a container, the more you make it profitable.
In fact, the containers are rented not in proportion to the surface occupied, but rather in full. So, wanting to take a large container just to “leave space” for your merchandise in the hope of paying less is a false calculation. In reality, the price of a shipping container depends on two main formats:
Standard Container | 20 feet |
XXL Container | 40 feet |
In conversion this gives approximately 6 and 12 meters respectively. As for the width, it remains the same regardless of the type of container: 2.4 meters. As for the height, it is also constant and will almost never exceed 2.5 meters.
The ideal shipping container for your goods
Size is important. But the nature and specificities of your shipping container are just as essential in making your choice. Please note that there are several types of containers, adapted to different and multiple uses (loads). Here is a non-exhaustive list of the most used.
The first container is the basic model, suitable for all types of cargo and certain reliability. It is in reality a very normal container, without any additional slots or openings.
Ce type de container est exclusivement réservé à la marchandise sèche (ou solide/poudreuse) et non liquide de préférence, d’où son nom.
The loading of this container will be done in the traditional way; that is to say laterally through its door. You will therefore need to take this detail into consideration if you plan to load goods that are delicate to handle.
The second type is the Flat container. As its name suggests, it is a container which reflects a flat and small appearance. For the simple reason that it has neither roof nor side walls. They can actually be dismantled, so you can store goods there whose height is greater than 2.5 meters.
Small bonus for these shipping containers: they also allow you to transport loads with durable packaging (wooden crate, protective sheath against bad weather, etc.), so no need to invest in a more covered container.
This container is the most convenient in terms of loading, from the top, left or right, all sides can be operated to load the cargo. An effective time and money saver if you have to ship merchandise that is complicated to load.
Finally, the third and last type of container is the most interesting; This is the Open Top model. You will have understood, it is a container whose roof is non-existent. For this model, you will have the choice between leaving your merchandise in the open air, or covering it with a protective tarpaulin against the rain.
The main advantage of this Open Top container is that it allows vertical loading, therefore ideal for packages that are too large for the door. Of course, you will receive valuable help in choosing the container adapted to your situation and your needs from our agents.
Special shipping containers
Obviously, there are other, more specific alternatives that we can make available to you. Whatever type of load you wish to have sent, we are available to assist you.
Furthermore, our teams can offer you two other types of special containers , in the event that the cargo requires specific treatment. These are in fact temperature-controlled containers and tank containers.
The first is also called “Reefer”, it is designed to be able to program the temperature inside from an external control monitor. It is a motor and a thermal system incorporated into its skeleton which allow it to offer such a service.
Thus, this type of container is widely used for foodstuffs, cosmetics, medicines and other materials requiring continuous refrigeration (cold chain).
The second container is the Cistern type, it is a container specially dedicated to the transport of liquids of all kinds. Here again, you will be spoiled for choice as to the type of materials to transport (flammable, corrosive, intended for food, etc.).
You can count on our experts to direct you to a particular type of container after having explained the details of your load.
Sharing your container, a good idea?
Yet another practical option to avoid additional sea freight : sending a container to share common space. This is an interesting alternative to take into consideration if your load is minimal or does not fill the 33 cubic meters of the container.
It is then a matter of co-renting a container with two or more people to reduce costs, always with the same route of course, but also the same transport conditions.
Maritime Container FAQ
There are several ways to track a shipping container. One way is to use a container or bill of lading number to track the container online. Another way is to use the International Maritime Organization (IMO) identification number, which is a unique number assigned to each shipping container. You can also track a shipping container using its dimensions and weight.
This depends on the origin and destination of the shipment, as well as the size and weight of the container. We cannot give you approximate prices because these are far too variable, depending on your project. Request a free quote so that we can assess your needs and define a competitive price for you!
Prices for new and used containers can vary considerably, depending on the size and type of container. However, as a rough guide, you can expect to pay between $1,500 and $2,000 for a new 20-foot container, and between $750 and $1,000 for a used 20-foot container. Prices for larger containers (40 or 45 feet) will be higher.
There are a few places you can buy shipping containers. Check with your local shipping company or visit a site like Sea Container Trader to find a used container for sale near you. If you’re looking for a new container, try searching for “shipping containers” online and you’ll find plenty of options, both new and used.
